The Daily Prothom Alo (Bengali: ) is a Bengali-language daily newspaper published in Bangladesh from Dhaka. It is Bangladesh's most widely read newspaper. Prothom Alo has around 6.6 million daily readers online, according to the National Media Survey 2018, performed by Kantar MRB Bangladesh. The online portal of Prothom Alo is the most viewed Bangla website in the world, according to Alexa Internet, an American web traffic research company.
On November 4, 1998, Prothom Alo was established. Prothom Alo went from a circulation of 42,000 to a circulation of half a million copies in just a few years. The publication was known for its investigations of acid attacks and brutality against women, as well as its advocacy for tighter legislation prohibiting the sale of acid. Every day, roughly 5,00,000 copies are circulated from press facilities in Dhaka, Chittagong, and Bogra (as of March 2014). According to the National Media Survey 2018, 6.6 million people read Prothom Alo in print every day. This newspaper's web and print editions have a combined circulation of 7.6 million people.
Rozina Islam, a top reporter for Prothom Alo, was arrested for 5 hours in the Bangladesh Secretariat on May 17, 2021, after she went there to cover the health ministry. An official from the Health Service Division initiated a lawsuit against her under the Official Secrets Act. She was transported to Shahbagh Police Station after the case was filled up. She was held in police custody for five days and interrogated. On May 23, 2021, she was freed from Kashimpur prison on bail.
